We are an organisation for women run by women. Our aim is to help abused women and their children, and to end such violence against women.

  What is Women's Aid in Scotland?

There are 39 Women's Aid groups in Scotland. This network is supported by Scottish Women's Aid which undertakes national work, such as campaigning, education and training. Women's Aid in Scotland have a national children's office to focus on the needs of the children and abused women.

How is Western Isles Women's Aid Funded?

We are a charitable organisation and are dependent on fund raising and support from the community. Our future greatly depends upon grants and donations. We receive an individual donation and a grant from our local authority each year.

Who is Involved in Women's Aid?

We are women who may/may not have experienced abuse and are concerned about abused women and their children.

What is meant by an abused woman?

Any woman can be abused, she might be any woman you come in contact with. She might be your daughter, your friend, your mother, or grandmother, your neighbour -or she might be you.
A woman is abused if she is in any way frightened or ill treated -physically, sexually or mentally -by the person she lives with.

Are many women abused?

Many thousands of women in Scotland are abused every year. Many women in the Western Isles are abused every year. It doesn't matter where you live, how much money you have, what nationality you are how many children you have. In any given year, Women's Aid in Scotland expects to help thousands of Women.

Working for Change.

We aim to change attitude about violence against women, and in the long term we aim to put an end to the violence. In the short term we want to increase protection and fight for better choices for abused women and their children.

Women's Aid is represented on the Western Isles Domestic Abuse Forum along with key statutory and voluntary agencies.

We offer:

Advice, Support, Someone to talk to, information on Housing/legal rights, Benefits etc. If we do not have the information you need we can get it for you. As well as one-to-one counselling we offer telephone counselling and an on call service 7 nights a week from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m.
Safe accommodation and support for women and their children who need to move from their own home. Support for women and children who have left mainland refuge and returned to the Western Isles.
